That always sounds so simple, but it is complicated and anyone who has gone on a diet knows it. Some people can eat anything they want to and not gain weight. Other people seem to gain weight just from looking at food. Why Is That? Several factors can cause those unfair situations. The main one is metabolism. That is how fast your body burns calories. Some people have a fast metabolism. Other people have a slow metabolism. This can be due to differences in genetics, exercise habits, muscle mass, foods, spice, teas, health, and lifestyle habits. There are even studies that show that watching tv can slow down your metabolism. However, watching exercise programs can speed it up just a tad. Some diet programs or pills make big claims. I am sure you have seen this one. Lose 10 lbs in one week I always think, "How is that POSSIBLE?" Most of the weight you lose on diets like this is water weight. Water is easily removed and your weight can fluctuate 10lbs in a couple of weeks just by losing some water weight! Ten pounds -- that is 10 x 3500 calories or 35,000 calories that you would have to burn over and beyond what you took in. Walking for one hour burns less than 300 calories. If you walk an hour everyday, you would use around 2100 calories in a week. If you reduce your caloric intake by 200 calories a day, that would be 1400 calories a week. That plan would mean a loss of one pound per week. That is a much more realistic goal. Another scenario is that someone is eating 7000 calories a day and maintaining their weight. They start eating 2000 calories a day and yes, that would mean a loss of 10 lbs in one week. Yes, it is possible. It's not likely that most people can realistically lose ten pounds of body fat in a week. It's certainly not likely to happen after the first week or two. If that was the case, then we would all be the perfect weight, wouldn't we? Okay, enough fantasy. Reality time. If someone is trying to tell you that you can lose 10 pounds weekly, don't waste your time and money. The best weight plan is realistic. If you are going to lose weight, you have got to change your habits. If you are going to keep the weight off, then those new habits have got to become permanent. For a new action to become a habit, it takes at least 30 days of repetition. The first thing that has to change is your mindset. What does that mean? It means the way you think about food, meals, snacks, mealtimes, cravings, using food for an emotional fix, or anything else that has to do with eating or not eating food has to change. The way you think has to be positive, determined, knowledgeable, and well thought out. Positive thinking is a hard concept for some people to grasp. Thinking the words is not enough. That is only thinking. Positive thinking is thinking the words, saying them, writing goals, and putting them into action. Determination will affect your will power. You could think of this as prioritizing. What is most important? What do you really want? This is what most people think of when the word mindset is mentioned. Know your limititations and know when to phone a friend for support. To be knowledgeable about your eating habits, you have to educate yourself. You will have to know how many calories you need and how many calories you are eating. You should know if you are getting enough nutrients. Are you getting enough vitamins in what you eat? What about calcium? If your change of mindset is well thought out, then you will have a plan. You will know what your daily eating plan is and how you can modify it if needed. If someone brings free pastries to work once in a while, then you have to know yourself. If you eat one, can you stop? If you eat one, will it cause a sugar addiction? If someone brings in pastries everyday, then you have to have an alternative plan. Have a sugar free snack that you really love on hand. In other words, think about the stoppers that usually cause you to fail and have a backup plan. Most importantly, do not quit because you eat something that is not on your "diet." You can eat what you want to. You now choose to eat healthy. That is your new mindset. Eating pizza or cake or whatever today does not mean you have to eat that everyday. You just reset your goals and go on with your new eating habits. |
